How to Maintain an Iron Driveway Gate

May 1, 2023 | Fence Gates

While an iron driveway gate can look incredible and provide a lot of security for your home, you will need to keep it maintained to keep it looking good and functioning correctly.

Fortunately, this is actually pretty simple as the maintenance is not that challenging, it just requires you to follow the right steps and be persistent with your efforts. We have a few tips we’ve learned over our 30 years of building iron driveway gates that we can impart.

Rust Prevention

When it comes to protecting your residential fence gates from rust, it’s always better to be proactive than reactive. The time and effort required to remove rust from your fence gates can be substantial, so it’s much more efficient to take measures to prevent it from forming in the first place. Thankfully, there are a couple of effective options to choose from.

The first option is to use a rust-proof finish on your fence gates. This type of finish is specially formulated to prevent rust from forming on metal surfaces. By applying this finish to your fence gates, you can significantly extend their lifespan and avoid the need for rust removal later on. Another option is to use a primer that naturally resists rust. This type of primer contains special chemicals that create a barrier on the surface of your fence gates, preventing rust from taking hold.

However, even with the use of rust-proof finishes and rust-resistant primers, it’s important to keep in mind that rust can still form over time. Therefore, it’s crucial to stay on top of routine cleaning and maintenance to prevent any rust buildup from becoming a more significant problem. Regularly inspecting your fence gates for signs of rust and cleaning them with appropriate rust removers will help to keep them looking and functioning their best for years to come.

Rust Removal

The rust removal process may be time-consuming and inconvenient, but it’s not necessarily a difficult task. All you really need is some sandpaper and elbow grease to sand off the rust from the surface of the gate. The key to successfully removing rust is to ensure that you have removed it entirely from the surface of the gate. If there is any remaining rust, it may continue to spread and cause problems in the future.

Once you have successfully removed all the rust from your fence gate, it’s important to take the necessary steps to prevent it from coming back. As we mentioned earlier, using a rust-proof finish or a rust-resistant primer can go a long way. However, there are other measures you can take as well, such as applying a protective coating to the surface of the gate to prevent moisture from accumulating, which can be a leading cause of rust formation.

It’s worth noting that even with the most stringent rust prevention measures in place, rust may still develop over time, especially if the gate is exposed to harsh weather conditions. Therefore, you should regularly inspect your fence gate for any signs of rust and to take immediate action to address it before it becomes a more significant problem.

Routine Cleaning

Keep in mind that the gate’s surface can be quite sensitive to scratches and other imperfections. It’s essential to use the right cleaning tools to avoid damage. For example, you’ll want to avoid using abrasive brushes or harsh cleaning chemicals that can scratch or strip the surface of the gate.

Instead, when doing routine cleaning, it’s best to use a soft-bristled brush or a microfiber cloth to gently remove dirt or debris. If you need to use a cleaning solution, it’s best to use a mild soap or a specially formulated cleaner that is designed to be gentle on the surface of the gate.

Drying by Hand

The best method of drying is to do it by hand, mainly because it prevents moisture from settling. When moisture is allowed to sit on your iron driveway gate, there is a chance it can lead to rusting.

Keeping your iron gate functioning and looking good is simple once you know what to do.
